Are startup investors ready for the Middle East?

This past Spring, I had the pleasure of joining approximately 100 startup investors in Bahrain to see some of the Middle East’s best early-stage companies. From Lebanon to the Emirates to Egypt and beyond, 45 startups — many recent graduates of top accelerators — presented their traction and visions of the future. Most were good; some were exceptional. And despite being immersed in frigid Gulf-quality air-conditioning for their pitches, the energy of the entrepreneurs and readiness of the investors was palpable.

Rachael Qualls is the CEO of Venture360, a platform managing the entire private investment process from application to exit for venture firms and angel group across the world. Previously, Rachael founded Angel Capital Group, based in Knoxville, and served as its CEO until September of 2013. Having sat on both sides of the table, as both an investor and entrepreneur, Rachael was able to develop Venture360 to meet the unique needs of both of these diverse groups. Chris Heivly is one of the Co-Founders of MapQuest (sold to AOL for $1.2B in 1999). He was a Managing Director of a $25 million Venture Fund in the late 90’s and has been a CEO, COO and/or President of various companies ranging from $200k to $20M in size. Currently, he is one of two Managing Directors of The Startup Factory, which is an accelerator based in Durham, North Carolina that invests in 10-14 seed-stage startups annually.
